Replacing just one tooth has made a tremendous difference in our patient’s smiles and well-being at the office of Shane Nelson DDS in Overland, Kansas. So, you can imagine how powerful it is for us to replace a mouthful of missing or failing teeth. We can now accomplish this particularly efficiently and minimally invasively with the full-arch dental implant process, which may be “All-on-X®” implants. We are happy to introduce you to this truly transformative solution with four terms to know about full-arch implants.

No. 1: Dental arch

The structure of your mouth consists of two dental arches. These arches are the curved structures that house the teeth. So, you have an upper arch and a lower arch. Implants may be positioned in the jawbone to secure an upper arch of prosthetic teeth or to replace all of the teeth in the lower arch. For individuals with no healthy teeth, we can replace all teeth in the upper and lower dental arch with implants. So, while a single implant may be applied to support a dental crown, thereby replacing one tooth, more implants may be inserted to replace all upper and lower teeth with dentures.

No. 2: Dental implants

Dental implants are specifically designed to be placed in the jawbone. They use materials that naturally integrate with the jaw tissues. Once integration is complete, we can connect the implant to the prosthetic tooth or crown, securing it in place. In this way, the implant serves as a tooth root, providing natural stability for the crown.

No. 3: All-on-X®

The “all on” refers to the number of implants positioned and secured in the jawbone to hold the upper/lower denture(s) in place. The idea behind the All-on-X process is to insert minimal implants to support a maximum number of prosthetic teeth/dentures. It is possible to implant as few as four to six implants to support an entire upper or lower denture. Depending on the size and shape of the jaw, among other factors, these implants can stabilize anywhere from 10 to 14 prosthetic teeth in the upper or lower jaw.

No. 4: Bone resorption

There are many benefits associated with implants and this All-on-X® approach to applying them. One of the most prominent benefits is these dentures keep the underlying bony tissue nice and strong. Since they are connected to the jaw, the bone gets the stimulation it needs to stay strong from functions like mashing food. Due to how these minimal implants are placed to maximize available bone, they are a great option for patients with existing bone loss who are not good candidates for grafting. Fewer implants also mean less expense and time in treatment, as well as minimized surgical sites and decreased demands on the body for healing and recovery. The advantages do not stop here.
