Of the many technologies that have transformed dentistry in the last few decades, laser dentistry is on the top of the list. This versatile treatment makes dental care and recovery faster and more comfortable for patients and allows Dr. Shane Nelson to perform procedures with ultimate precision for safer, more effective care.

Laser dentistry uses

Patients in the Overland Park, KS area can benefit from laser dentistry in a wide variety of treatments. Dr. Shane Nelson uses the Waterlase iPlus laser to perform the following procedures:

  • Laser dental cleanings for clean, healthy teeth and gums
  • Laser dental fillings without the sounds and smells of a rotary drill
  • Periodontal treatments, such as eliminating bacteria from periodontal pockets, removing diseased tissue, and laser gum reshaping

Benefits of laser dentistry

Dentists and patients alike love laser dentistry for many reasons. One of the most important reasons is that it is safer and healthier for your teeth and gums: it enables Dr. Nelson to use a level of precision that traditional tools do not allow, and is also more conservative, preserving more healthy tissue and inflicting less damage on the surrounding tissues than scalpels and drills. Other benefits of lasers in dental treatments include:

  • Less pain – lasers are more comfortable than traditional dental tools; in many cases, anesthesia is not even necessary, so you do not  have to leave the office with a numbed mouth. Dr. Nelson can provide nitrous oxide or local anesthesia if you have dental anxieties or are concerned about pain
  • Little to no bleeding – lasers cauterize tissues as they treat them, which means that there is less bleeding during your procedure
  • Less chance of infection – bacterial infections are a possibility with many dental procedures, but lasers sterilize as they go, which means you are at less risk of infection
  • More rapid recovery – healing and recovery are faster and easier with laser treatment than traditional incisions, and sutures are unnecessary after laser treatment
