Status as a mercury-free dental practice is fundamental to biological dentistry. And our dentist, Dr. Shane Nelson at Dentistry by Shane Nelson, DDS, is among a small and select group of highly qualified practitioners in the state of Kansas to also be certified in “mercury-safe” techniques. So, individuals living near Overland Park are fortunate to have convenient access to one of the state’s top, trusted holistic and biological providers.

What are mercury-related practices (and why they matter)

Mercury is a known toxin. Silver-colored metal fillings for cavity repair are referred to as “dental amalgam” because they are an amalgam or blend of mercury and powdered alloy (of tin, copper, and silver). As acknowledged by the FDA, amalgam releases mercury over time. It is released in higher quantities during certain actions, such as chewing or habitually grinding teeth. Furthermore, mercury can accumulate in tissues and organs throughout the body.

As indicated by the IAOMT protocols, mercury is also released as vapors and particles while drilling and removing amalgam. So, the process itself threatens the health of our patients, the dentist, and the staff. Additionally, when mercury in amalgam is not disposed of under protocols such as IAOMT’s SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique), the health of our community, waterways, and planet is also threatened.

For these and other reasons, Dr. Nelson refrains from using mercury fillings. We only use materials that are biocompatible and nontoxic. True to their name, biocompatible materials like ceramics and composite resins have high compatibility with biological or living tissues. It is essential to leave our office in a better state than when you arrived. Using safe, healthy, hypoallergenic materials supports our ability to transform patients’ smiles and lives for the better. Additionally, alternatives to amalgam and traditional amalgam removal techniques align well with other facets of biological dentistry:

  • Metal-free ceramics and resins are generally more conservative and tissue-preserving. Less of the tooth structure is drilled out to restore damaged teeth
  • Alternatives to “silver” fillings balance optimal aesthetics and premium performance, and functionality. They look like “natural teeth” and are also built to last by better mimicking natural tissues
  • The materials and techniques that we use resolve the root cause of oral health problems and the systemic issues that may originate in the mouth; for instance, everything from gastrointestinal upset to chronic migraines may be relieved by replacing fillings that contain toxic substances
