As a holistic dentist, Dr. Shane Nelson sees past the teeth and gums and uses a whole body approach. Our team in Overland Park, Kansas, appreciates that the mouth does not exist in isolation from the rest of the body. It both influences and is influenced by other bodily systems, organs, and overall systemic health. With this fundamental approach to dental care at heart, we consider our patients’ state of mind, background, and prior dental experiences. We know that past experiences can either help or hinder present experiences and perceptions.

Fortunately, oral sedation is just one of many ways we help individuals who are reluctant or apprehensive about visiting the dentist. Know that we are here for you with a kind and gentle touch. Our office also represents a “judgment-free” zone. It is truly our privilege to get you back to feeling better, especially if it’s been several years since you last visited the dentist.

We see sedation as a nice complement to this stress-free approach. Sedation is just a way of saying that relaxing medications are available to help you manage anxiety or fear at the dentist’s office. There are different levels of sedation that dentists may be equipped to offer. Dr. Nelson, for one, has the training to administer oral conscious sedation safely and predictably as a “step-up” regarding sedative levels from the mildest option: nitrous oxide or “laughing gas.” Oral sedation may be appropriate if you or a family member has more intense fears or other challenges that stand in the way of getting necessary dental care.

These challenges could include:

  • Inability to sit still for stretches at a time
  • Claustrophobia, or a fear of small spaces
  • Impaired sensitivity to localized anesthetics for pain management

Also, it may be advised for patients who are undergoing lengthier or more complex procedures.

As its name suggests, a pill is prescribed and taken orally (by mouth) as directed by Dr. Nelson. Typically, you’ll be instructed to take one dose of the medication the night prior to your appointment and a second dose one hour prior to the start of your treatment. The conscious part comes into play when patients feel so relaxed that they may nod off; however, they are never “under.” They remain conscious, can communicate, and can easily be awakened as needed. Patients describe feeling well-rested afterward, and often with little to no actual memory of the triggering treatment itself. Due to the risk of lingering drowsiness, you must arrange reliable transportation to and from our office in Overland Park, KS.

Bring your concerns to us. Again, we are here to help. Call (913) 297-7800 with questions and to schedule an appointment with Dr. Nelson today.
