Together, these features add up to an experience that is comfortable, convenient, safe, and hassle-free – especially for those many individuals with dental apprehension or fear.
Sedation for dental work
Sedation at the dentist’s office generally refers to recommended and prescribed medications to relax anxious or fearful patients. There are different methods of dental sedation. These include the lightest method: “laughing gas” or nitrous oxide. The relaxing gas is administered via a nasal mask. Its effects take hold quickly and do not linger. It is even appropriate for young patients.
Some patients may be more appropriate candidates for oral conscious sedation. Dr. Nelson will recommend a sedative medication following a thorough evaluation of your medical history and consultation with you. We will then provide clear instructions on how to take the sedative pill. True to its name, you remain conscious. Yet you will feel calm, at ease, and worry-free. Patients generally remember little about their treatment. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from our office in Overland Park, Kansas, using this method, as it is not safe to operate machinery or drive after treatment due to lingering drowsiness.

Sedation dentistry is not “just” appropriate for patients with fears about visiting the dentist. It is also suitable for other types of patients who have challenges getting the treatment necessary for their oral and overall health. For instance, good candidates to benefit from dental sedation include:
- Fidgety or hyperactive patients who have problems sitting still.
- Patients undergoing complex procedures, for instance, oral surgeries.
- Patients with lengthy appointments on the horizon.
