At Dentistry by Shane Nelson, DDS in Overland Park, Kansas, we prioritize patient safety, comfort, and a pleasant experience (we treat you like “family”!). The All-on-X® implant solution fits in perfectly with the approach to care that is at the heart of our holistic dental practice.
It is a minimally-invasive way to place dental implants. Less invasive treatment is associated with minimal discomfort, risk of complications, and fast and predictable healing. So, All-on-X® is a safe and well-tolerated way to use dental implants to replace missing teeth.
Tooth replacement with implants
To understand how the All-on-X® system works, you need to first understand dental implants in general. Each implant is a cylindrical-shaped post. It is typically made from either a strong and lightweight medical-grade metal, titanium, or a metal-free ceramic, zirconium.
The materials used to make the implant are biocompatible, which means they can be safely integrated with natural tissues. When the implant is precisely positioned in the jawbone by Dr. Nelson, it naturally and safely fuses to the surrounding bone over time.
After the implant has integrated with the bone and is effectively connected to the rest of the jaw, we attach the tooth restoration or visible part of the replacement tooth to it. In turn, the implant functions like a tooth root to stabilize the dental crown or restoration. Unlike a natural tooth, we do not need to place one implant or artificial tooth root to support each and every dental restoration or replacement tooth. This is where systems like All-on-X® come into play.
The All-on-X® difference
This solution may benefit individuals who are missing most or all of their teeth. Instead of potentially requiring dozens of implants, we can use All-on-X® to replace all the teeth in the upper or lower dental arch with as few as four implants. The idea is to place implants at the back of the mouth at an angle. In doing so, these implants make the most of the available bone in the jaw. They are placed in a way to optimally support the denture that is later attached to them. By using minimal implants to stabilize a maximum number of teeth effectively, patients benefit from the following:
- Lower hardware-related costs (the implant itself is the most expensive part of treatment)
- Fewer implant sites and less trauma to the mouth
- Eliminates the need for bone grafts among some patients with bone loss due to how the implants are positioned
- May provide immediate function
- Superior durability, cosmetics, and a feel that is closest to natural teeth
