At Dentistry by Shane Nelson, DDS, your safety, health, comfort, and experience at our dentist office in Overland Park is paramount. We are proud that patients feel like they are valued, extended members of our “family,” and that they 110% trust their health and well-being to us. Principles such as biomimetic dentistry are at the heart of who we are and what we do, and they facilitate utmost comfort and satisfaction with our treatments and services.
Biomimetic dentistry
“Bio” refers to the study of life sciences, while “mimetic” means “mimicry” or “imitation.” So, biomimetic dentistry “mimics or imitates nature”; for instance, techniques, materials, products, and procedures are modeled after natural tissues. Tooth-colored restorations like fillings made from composite resin embody these principles. These and other examples of biomimetic offerings at our office are generally:
- Conservative – Minimal alteration of the natural tooth is associated with a better final result. We do not remove excess natural structure. Likewise, excessive use of synthetic components (like posts with crowns) is also minimized. Rebuilt teeth are then able to move and bend like natural teeth.
- Tissue-preserving – Similarly, advanced non-metal materials and adhesives eliminate the need to aggressively “drill down” or remove otherwise healthy natural tooth structure. Less invasive treatments also support the lasting durability of the restoration, sustained oral health, fast healing, and minimal bleeding, discomfort, and other side effects following treatment.
- Proactive care – As a biomimetic dentist, Dr. Nelson partners with patients on a routine basis to assess their oral care during regular check-ups and cleanings. That way, problems are detected and dealt with in their earliest stages before they require extensive treatment to resolve decay or disease that threatens the teeth and gums. This preventive approach to care avoids the need for root canal therapy.

The use of light-touch techniques and care that prevents, rather than reacts to conditions, supports the health and beauty of your smile. Likewise, regardless of your unique needs, Dr. Nelson uses only those durable, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic materials that are “biocompatible,” or “compatible” with living tissues. If a tooth can’t be “saved” through these biomimetic and conservative means, we are happy to discuss prompt and safe tooth replacement that preserves the supportive bone in the jaws.
