Ozone Dentistry

Ozone: Naturally healing oral wounds since the 1930s, available at your holistic dentist’s office

Ozone is a remarkable and versatile therapeutic option. In our dental universe, ozone may be used for diverse applications, from eradicating harmful oral bacteria as part of a hygiene program to building up tooth enamel to ease painful sensitivity. But one of the ozone’s most compelling benefits is its well-documented capacity to heal wounds. At Dentistry by Shane Nelson, DDS, we may use ozonated water, gas, or oils to encourage reattachment or regeneration of healthy tissues. Dr. Nelson is accustomed to being a leader in Overland Park and throughout the state of Kansas when it comes to dentists using holistic and biomimetic techniques and products. Dental ozone may be recommended in conjunction with an array of other approaches or technologies to gently, conveniently, precisely, and safely support or restore your healthy, vibrant smile.

Nature’s healer

Ozone’s medical applications can be traced back to the 1800s. This highly reactive form of oxygen has even been used to disinfect hospital operatories for more than 100 years. Since then, building upon its proven disinfection and wound healing properties, ozone has been introduced to and innovated across an array of medical disciplines not limited to endocrinology, respiratory care, and ophthalmology. For Dr. Nelson‘s part, he non-invasively applies ozone in its many forms to targeted tissues and treatment sites. So, dental ozone presents a particularly precise way to encourage tissue healing. Since treatment can be targeted so well, it is considered safe and has a low risk of side effects and complications. Tissues or areas outside of the treatment area are not touched or affected.

As a conservative treatment, ozone is well tolerated by patients. It is such a “light touch” option that even those patients with “dentophobia” can benefit. Ozone eliminates or minimizes the need for many triggers or sources of dental fear and stress, including needles and numbing anesthetic. In fact, in addition to its antimicrobial properties, ozone has an analgesic or pain-relieving effect. Here, we’ve isolated just a few of the ways ozone may be applied to restore diseased, inflamed, or other damaged tissues:

  • To encourage healthy reattachment of the gums to the teeth – We may use a combination of ozonated water and gas under the gums and soft tissues to resolve periodontal disease.
  • To address severe decay – We may apply ozone to treat the inside of an infected tooth and to prevent existing infections from spreading. Ozone is also an effective method to resolve smaller cavities that reside in the uneven biting surfaces of the back teeth (fissures and pits in the molars and premolars).
  • To ease the pain and aid in healing a variety of infections and lesions, from canker sores to oral ulcers and lichen planus
