Bone Grafting

Preserve Failing Teeth, Build Up Bone for Implants with Versatile Grafting Process

At the Kansas City area office of Dr. Shane Nelson in Overland Park, we make every effort to preserve natural teeth. While tooth replacement methods have improved considerably in modern times, natural and healthy teeth remain superior in form and function. Dr. Nelson uses advanced, biomimetic, and holistic principles, techniques, and technologies to restore the structure of the teeth and “save” a failing, decayed, or diseased tooth.

In fact, regenerative bone grafting presents a surprisingly straightforward option to build up the supportive tissues in the jaw. Here is how it (largely) works:

  • Donor bone tissue is harvested. Donor sources include the patient’s own body or from another human, animal, and synthetic source formulated with natural minerals. Dr. Nelson will discuss your options during a consultation.
  • The tissue or graft is then transferred or transplanted to the area suffered from deterioration or bone resorption.
  • This process is done on treatment sites numbed precisely with a local anesthetic. So, you won’t feel any discomfort or sensations as the graft is attached to the treatment area. For utmost relaxation, we also offer various safe sedative options.
  • We will discuss ways to encourage prompt and uneventful healing before your appointment. Generally, side effects are limited to localized soreness that can be effectively eased with a cold compress and typically subsides in a few days.
  • The bone should begin regenerating at the treatment site in the months following your procedure. As partners in your oral health, we will schedule follow-up visits and monitor your progress.

Bone-regenerating techniques are versatile and useful. Notably, we can use this procedure to preserve teeth threatened by progressive or advanced periodontal or gum disease. As gum disease progresses, it can break down the supportive soft and hard tissues surrounding the teeth and the jaw. Teeth may shift and become loose in their sockets. We can halt this destructive process and effectively address the disease with regenerative bone grafting.

Bone grafts may also be a preparatory step for individuals who need tooth replacement. Dental implants require a foundation of strong bone. However, some patients may have experienced bone resorption. The jawbone needs stimulation from the teeth and functions such as grinding down food to maintain its strength and density. Without teeth, the bone can retreat. These patients can still enjoy the many benefits of implant-supported crowns, bridges, and dentures, thanks to the benefits of bone grafting. The donor bone tissue is used to “ready” the jaw for the implant positioned precisely in the bone. Then, the implant can best support the replacement tooth attached to it.
