Mercury Safe Removal

Trust your health, smile to a safe mercury removal dentist in Overland Park

There are more than 700 dentists in Kansas. And Shane Nelson, DDS, is one of only four dentists in the state to have acquired the distinction as a SMART-certified dentist. SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. SMART is a series of rigorous recommendations set forth by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology, of which Dr. Nelson is a proud member. The IAOMT is a global network of biological dentists who support and advocate for truly mercury-free, mercury-safe, and biocompatible dental practices.

The difference between “mercury-free” and “mercury-safe”

We are aligned with the IAOMT in that Dentistry by Shane Nelson, DDS, does not believe being “mercury-free” alone is sufficient. The term “mercury-free,” refers to those dentists and practices who do not place silver-colored amalgam fillings. These fillings are made from a mix of metals, copper, tin, and silver. However, the most significant component of amalgam fillings is mercury, a known toxin classified by the World Health Organization (WHO). Mercury-free dentists only place those fillings made from biocompatible (tissue-compatible), non-toxic, metal-free materials such as dental composites.

Dental practices like ours are also “mercury-safe.” We acknowledge that this known toxin must be handled with great care when removed from our patient’s mouths. Research indicates that mercury is released at higher levels during the filling removal process. As the amalgam is being drilled and otherwise altered, mercury is released as particulate matter or vapors. This process presents a threat to the health of our patients, our staff, and the planet.

SMART precautions

We take the IAOMT recommendations seriously and follow them precisely. We have the certification to show for our investments in the equipment and training to remove mercury fillings safely. Just a few of the ways that we distinguish ourselves from other general dentists or biological dentists who only practice mercury-free dentistry include:

  • Application of waterproof barriers to the treatment site, which helps to limit mercury spread and exposure
  • External oxygen supplementation, which eliminates the risk of patients accidentally inhaling the mercury in its vaporous form or as small particles
  • The use of protective gowns, nitrile gloves, and head coverings for dentists, staff, and patients as necessary
  • Filtration and ventilation systems to remove the mercury vapors and particulate matter from the environment
  • Collect waste from the removal of mercury amalgam fillings separately and using specific protocols while also disposing of it in an environmentally friendly way
  • Reducing the heat that is generated during the filling’s removal process, which helps to temper the level of mercury that is released into the air

Your health and the beauty of your smile are in excellent hands every step of the way at Dentistry by Shane Nelson, DDS. Call us at (913) 297-7800 to schedule your appointment today.
