Treatment with a mercury safe dentist

Throughout history, the mouth and body were treated independently without understanding the connection between the two and the impact of the mouth on the body. In holistic dentistry, we strive to treat and maintain the health of the whole patient. This includes educating our patients in understanding the dangers of mercury, and the reasons for amalgam filling removal.

Mercury Removal Process

At Dentistry by Shane Nelson, DDS, we maintain a mercury safe office and acknowledge the dangers this substance poses to our patients and dental staff. Dr. Nelson is a mercury safe dentist and is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). He follows the strict protocol and proper handling practices for the safe removal of amalgam fillings.

Whether for health reasons or due to problems with the filling, patients may want their fillings removed. In doing so, we follow a safe mercury removal process that involves specific procedures before, during, and after the fillings are removed. With standard filling removal, dentists often use a drilling technique that dangerously exposes the patient and dental staff to mercury vapors.

In contrast, our mercury safe dentist adheres to the IAOMT’s protocols to protect the health and wellness of the patient, staff, and environment. This minimizes mercury exposure during the filling removal process. The following steps are part of our safe mercury removal process:

  • A separator collects mercury waste.
  • State-of-the-art equipment and ventilators remove airborne vapors.
  • For the patient, chewing charcoal before and after the procedure helps absorb the mercury. A dental dam and oxygen mask also help avoid ingestion of mercury vapors.
  • The dental team is protected by gowns, gloves, and masks to avoid mercury exposure.
